Teach Me!!

“Listen, Sam, if it was nature, nobody wouldn't have tuh look out for babies touchin' stoves, would they? 'Cause dey just naturally wouldn't touch it. But dey sho will. So it's caution.” “Naw it ain't, it's nature, cause nature makes caution. It's de strongest thing dat God ever made, now. Fact is it's de onliest thing God every made. He made nature and nature made everything else.” (Pg. 64)

Sam Watson and Lige Moss are on the porch at Jody's Store having an arguement.  Sam said that she [Moss] should have known better and Moss said that you have to be taught what you know.  Moss is right, humans are not born with the ablitly to understand of even know of all the dangers in this world.  That is why young children need parents to tell them what to do.  In relation to the novel, Janie goes through her life learning things from people she meets.  She travels the state, overcoming obstacles that she must face in order to reach her goal of a happy life.  Her quote also suggests a natural conflict between humans and nature.  In her mind there are "stoves' everywhere and people must be careful in this dangerous world.  Everything is dangerous.
