A Storm is Coming

"The wind came back with triple fury, and put out the light for the last time. They sat in company with the others in other shanties, their eyes straining against crude walls and their souls asking if He meant to measure their puny might against His. They seemed to be staring at the dark, but their eyes were watching God." (Pg. 160)

While Janie and Tea Cake are living in the Muck, the Everglades, a large hurricane hits.  Most people leave and head for higher ground, but Janie, Tea Cake and a man named Motor Boat stay behind.  It is significant that Janie, Tea Cake and Motor Boat, the only three people left, are together during the storm, it represents the fact that we are all united together against the same conflicts.  It shows us that human relationships and bonds can provide shelter through the storm; both literal and figurative storms.  Janie feels as though God is testing her might against his and that she was looking toward God for answers.  It shows that there is a conflict between humans and God.  A conflict between omniscience of God and the ignorance of man.
